The original collection of 10,000 Bored Apes went on sale in April 23, 2021, and sold out on the night of April 30. They act as the primary membership to the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem.

The website states that it is: A limited NFT collection where the token itself doubles as your membership to a swamp club for apes. Each Bored Ape is unique and programmatically generated from over 170 possible traits, including expression, headwear, clothing, and more. All apes are dope, but some are rarer than others.

Since launching, celebrities like Tom Brady, Shaquille O’Neal, Paris Hilton, Eminem, Jimmy Fallon, Madonna, Steph Curry, Lionel Richie, Justin Bieber, and more have bought into the Yacht Club, making the original Bored Apes a strong social community.

There are seven different attribute categories for Bored Apes, though not all Apes have seven attributes: background, clothes, earring, eyes, fur, hat, mouth. Sub-groups of apes based on attributes have broken out, with Twitter wars raging between different types of fur — with the rarest being Solid Gold, Trippy, Noise, Death Bot, and DMT. Each ape NFT comes with full commercial usage rights, meaning owners are able to sell products with the likeness of their ape on them.
